Actually, the devil can be many places...

...but not all at once...and he was not in my comments, friend Charles.

;-)

I think I made it clear that I was not commenting on the content of this audio tweaking thread. Since I didn't read the column in question, I wouldn't have done so. This avoids jumping to anywhere.

I am an editor, however, and I was merely stating my agreement with John Atkinson about the question of whether the act of publication necessarily entails an editorial blessing upon the views/content of the writer. An editor *may* agree with a point of view, or he or she may not, and publish in either case.

This was why I gave you a very recent example that I was familiar with from my own journal.

I could be wrong, and I have no idea of how John Atkinson would state the case, but personally, I parse the "We" in Stereophile's "As We See It" in neither the "Royal We" sense, nor as a conformist/corporate "We," but rather as a collection of individual viewpoints appearance *ad hoc* as individual writers feel led. The "We" would then simply be "we individuals here at Stereophile."

Your example of editorial line-drawing overlooked my briefly stated criteria of "disagreeing agreeably" and avoiding *ad hominem* or deliberately offensive (as opposed to provocative) content, Charles. The golden rule sums it up pretty well for me. By those guidelines your suggested KKK article for the NAACP falls to the ground.

As I said, I am not commenting on audio tweakery per se, simply on John's editorial stance regarding publishing an article or column and agreeing with its content. To publish is not necessarily to endorse, your newspaper analogy to the contrary. And I stand by my comments about the relationship between editorial conformity and drabness...check the example that I gave you in my prior posting.

I will note in passing that I have published much on the subject of audio enhancements and tweakery, both pro and con, in Positive Feedback and Positive Feedback Online over many years, as our archives show. Don't assume that I am not sympathetic and interested...indeed, active and empirical...on the subject.

All the best to you,

david
