Well, the problem with your hypothesis is that the amp I preferred had much more available power with better measured distortion than the EC, although both measure inaudibly at their respective maximum continuous power ratings.

The EC is rated at 250 WPC pure class A, with obviously much of its power being converted into heat, especially at idle. The Digital Amp on the other hand is almost 90 percent efficient, and is twice as powerful right out of the gate. To suggest that there is more than a 3db difference on transients is more than reasonable, and this would certainly contribute to my perceived difference in dynamics with both amps being driven the same, albeit aggressively.

So while it's possible that the amp I said sounded more dynamic was actually clipping, it's probable that it wasn't. In fact, the amp I said did not sound as dyanmic was more likely to clip at the volume I was listening at.
