Here's a suggestion

Before you try your A/B test and decide to spend a big pile of money on a new amp, and since you probably have a lot of equipment available to you at least as loaners, why not try to compensate your Electrocompaniet amplifier with a 1/3 octave equalizer to match the digital amp's real world spectrum as connected to your speakers. You may find that much if not all of the audible difference will go away. I'd be interested to hear how such an experiment comes out. And while you're at it, why not try compensating the cheap receiver to see how close you can get it to the higher priced models. I'd be interested in hearing how that comes out as well.
