I don't know

the actual goals of the MP3 development effort but it is at least reasonable to assume that to "... develop a compression algorythm that was acceptable to most people" can't be too far off the mark.

The goal of Hi-End audio on the other had is to seek excellence in the reproduction of music in the home setting, be it at the bleeding edge, or for a modest and affordable setting.

Thus it seems to me that to say the goals of these two pursuits are 'antithetical' isn't inaccurate in so much as practices employed in the one would be unthinkable in the other, etc.

Likewise one could expect major difference in the mind sets and opinions of those whose focus is on the one vs. on the other.

Now the back biting is another issue altogether. But perhaps, seeing you have been moved by it sufficiently to chastise one of the parties, why not do likewise for the other?

For example you might suggest to that other party to chill out and attempt to *not* demand a personal apology from the corresponding party in nearly every second post ... maybe he can be encouraged to do so in every third, or fourth?
