Normally, I would agree, but...

There have been times when I have "heard" something which was contrary to reviews that I have read.
Two instances come to mind.
A couple of years ago, I bought some Audioquest Coral ICs based off of reviews (and price!). The reviews were very good, so I was quite optimistic. I expected to hear a very smooth sound from my speakers... and was quite disappointed. By far the brightest cables I have ever used (not good for MY system). As well, I have read about the placebo effect in relation to the look of the cable as well. However, these particular cables are very thick, and colored black and red. Many people believe that this would, subconciously, cause me to "hear" a thick, dark sound. Nope. Bright, bright, bright.
I have had the exact opposite experience with silver ICs. Recently, a friend offered to make some solid silver cables for my system. I was reluctant because of all that I had read about silver sounding bright. He sent me a demo pair that had been broken in. Incredibly smooth sound, without any harshness, whatsoever. Plus, there is no insulation, save for packaging tape. So, these cables "look" very thin and weak. But this is not the sound I hear. I had him make me two sets, and am currently running them between CDP and preamp, and between preamp and power amp. No desire to change, they're perfect!
Go figure, hein?
Cheers,
Chris
