Yes, the alnico Altecs sound lighter to me too, if you mean lean or lacking extension. They also seem to smear on transients where the TADs just breeze through the same passage without getting mechanical sounding or artificial. As far has being hard driven by solid state I will know more next week when I try and drive a pair of 15's per side, but I think your right. The big 15" woofers wired in parallel will probably sound superior with solid state in the 50-150 cycle range I'll be using them in.

As far as the compression drivers go the simplicity of the SET amps directly driving them using active crossovers and round tractrix horns is absolutly stunning. The combination must be heard to fully understand. There is no compression, instruments within the orchestra all have there own space and unique timbre. They all have their own dynamics and can be followed individually or better yet as a whole. I have only experianced this listening ability live, never with any other system I've heard whether it be tube, ss, electrostatic, ribbons or dynamic cones and domes.
