Dear Newbie-Excellent post! Welcome to the world of hi-end audio !? I've thought/experianced the same thing. But I've found the best place to start is to learn what your musical proirities/biases are and what your trying to accomplish with your stereo. Then research/demo/listen to as much stuff as you can get your hands on. Only after trying it in your rig will you be able to decide if it satisfies your desires & budget.
