It has been my experience that a peaky upper midrange will cause fatigue. However, it has never taken long term listening to determine that. I can tell if a speaker is going to be fatiguing in a very short time. But then my auditioning always include a good orchestral recording with massed upper strings, such as a late Mozart or Beethoven symphony (well, usually Schubert's 9th, because no one else uses that one). As well, a good mixed chorus recording. This does not require long term listening, but is immediately apparent. If one does not use material which requires a smooth upper midrange to sound tolerable, then yes, I suppose one may pick a flashy speaker.
