Re: Please explain "listener's fatigue"

64.12.104.164

There is one other reason for "listener fatigue" not mentioned but worth noting, a new room. I had a system for years that was quite musical to the point that I felt no need to upgrade anything, I was just satisfied with the music. When I moved to a new house the system sounded "different" it wasn't bad it just didn't provide the enjoyment I experienced prior to moving.

It got to a point where I just stopped listening altogether until I finally, after many months, decided that the speakers just didn't work their magic in the new room. It let me to a completely new system which works very well in the room.

I feel another reason for perceived "listener fatigue" is psychologically induced by reading all the information such as this forum provides. It is a double edged sword, for an experienced person who has gone through the trials and tribulations of experimentation and who is at the point where he/she is confident in what is important in a musically satisfying system this forum is a godsend. On the other hand an inexperienced person who is trying to make decisions and who doesn't necessarily have confidence in what is important will take advice that may not ultimately be good for him. Thus the search for the "ultimately satisfying" system which can lead to spending lots of dough upgrading and changing out systems. I have seen this happen a lot. We all want more than what we've got. Hell I read a review in this forum on an SET amp where the guy described "tears rolling down my face" from listening to his system, it was that real or maybe more than real. Now that sounds like a cure for listener fatigue to me!

Man that only happened to me once that I can remember and it was a LIVE performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony with a 150 member choir and a 70 piece orchestra. It wasn't just the sound it was the whole experience including the visual. I can't imagine a stereo system providing that sort of experience, then again I don't own an SET system.
