RE: Tweeter difference problem with 3.3Rs and more

Hey guys,
Many thanks all of you for your help. Thanks Satie and Sailor for the tip on measuring the DC resistance.
Hager thanks for mentioning I would need a Hot gun to remove the tweeter and install it in the other speaker + vice versa, - sounds a bit tricky!, - yes I’d rather avoid that if possible if I can trouble shoot some other way.

So Satie am I right in thinking you mean I can tell by just measuring the DC resistance of the whole mid/tweeter network including the internal crossover (just putting the probes in the mid/tweeter terminals on the speaker? This is obviously a lot easier than measuring the resistance of the tweeter in isolation after getting inside an unsoldering a ribbon connector.
Like you say if there are other issues like bad connections on the crossover parts it will be hard to tell without measuring the tweeter in isolation and/or inspecting the internal crossover.

Seems measuring the DC resistance of the whole thing on each speaker to see if the readings are apart is a good place to start, then I’ll be opening up the speakers soon anyway like you say to do the delam repair. So I will double check all the connections in the crossover of both speakers then. I suppose it would not do any harm to carefully redo all the solder joints then anyway just in case any are cold.

Just a bit confused Satie as you initially say in your post the tweeter with more extension/brightness is the tweeter that I should consider reference ( and the other one should be considered sounding off). Then you say the brighter one is likely to be the one that is misbehaving?? by possibly being one that’s had a repair job and not had the 1ohms series resistor installed.

From listening, my own hunch is for some reason that the brighter tweeter is the good one and that’s the one that sounds right, and the other one is too dark/dull for some reason. I know logic would say this is less likely to be the case and it would be the other way around (based on the 1 ohms issue you mention) but remembering how my Dads MGIIIs sounded, - the balance of the sound is better with the brighter tweeter on these speakers in my opinion.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, - I will get to the bottom of it somehow!

Wanted to ask, - when I take the sock off (never done this before),will the sock come off OK with the tweeter still installed.

Satie many thanks for helping me with those calcs for the HP PLLXO and even looking up available components for me, really appreciated. Sorry to have taken up your time. I will get exactly what you have written. I will double check by ringing first that they are all in stock before cycling there! Hopefully I can return the favor to you somehow one day, - for example perhaps if there is ever anything at all in the UK you ever need I would be happy to help you out.

Cheers,
Colin
