BJH,I'll be happy to comment. You are absolutely correct, at one time I was a VERY aggressive cable skeptic. My thought's were:
1) How could wire possibly affect the sound?
2) If wire affected the sound, wouldn't manufactuers sell the "best" wire to use with their component so it would sound best? The fact that they don't proves wires don't affect the sound.I guess I'm just more open minded than other Objectivists (as I was at that time) However when Bernie offered to lend me 5 different interconnects, I fiqured I had nothing to lose, so I took them home and listened to them. I was shocked to discover that not only did wires sound different, but some sounded a lot better than others.
Unlike other Objectivists here I didn't have an extensive knowledge of ABX, DBT nor did I demand that tests be unsighted or scientific. I had always trusted my ears and up to that point in time my ears NEVER heard wire affect the sound.
Problem was I always used cheap interconnect that either a) came with the component or the audio salon gave me or b) upgraded to Rat Shack interconnects. Unfortunately there wasn't enough of a difference in these wires to hear.
That all changed when Bernie gave me Nordost, Straightwire, XLO, Cardas and Audioquest to take home and try. I installed the Audioquest Emeralds expecting to hear absolutely nthing differenet. Boy was I ever amazed at the differences that were IMMEDIATELY apparent!
Perhaps I'm fortunate to have based my previous beliefs on what I heard and not what I read, thought sounded very scientific and thus correct. I've always been that way though, no matter how firmly I believe something is true, I will always be open to being proved wrong---in the end I want the truth, NOT what I think the truth is!
That weekend changed my life, I switched from being an Objectivist to a Subjectivist. So that's it in a nutshell BJH. I only KNOW what I've heard. I thought that maybe just maybe if another once strict believer that cable difference couldn't be heard, admitted they heard differences maybe others would at least consider the possibility.
I've come to believe that the typical Objectivist doesn't want to know the truth, they just want to be right! People like that are impossible to convince, debate or reason with. So I think I'll just withdraw from making further comments to them. If my friend Roger Russell ever decides to administer a interconnect test for me, I'll post the results, but I don't expect much from the Objectivists...
