When you looked at the McGurk effect what did you hear with your eyes open and your eyes closed? Are you insulted by fooling yourself like this? It is simply the brain filling in information which it does all the time and in all sorts of ways.

By knowing what cables are connected you are exposing yourself to such effects. Whether they were a significant factor in your experiment I do not know because we lack the relevant information. It seems highly likely you did not match levels to within a level that is inaudible but this is pure speculation. Without the relevant information nobody can tell you what went on.

Why would anyone need excuses? Unless somebody happens to live in the neighbourhood, why would you expect anyone to take considerable time and effort to help show you how to perform an audibility experiment if you make no effort to find out yourself?
