And would probably be more predictable. But to your final point, I would be more likely to experiment with digital room correction than a tone control.

Not yet. But after years of experimentation, I'm completely happy with the system I now have. It could be further improved, I'm sure, but swapping out components is so hit and miss (and improvements are so subtle, I'm not even sure they're real) so you hit on my next experimentation. I need to read up on it a bit.
