>No other hobby has cost differences and unsubstantiated claims as does ours does.>
I beg your pardon, but every hobby does.--- Maybe, but the differences are much greater than specified.
>A Ferrari will blow my lowly Bimmer off of the road.>
Yeah but what about an M5 with a V-10?
--- Possibly if the M5 guy is not a so called cafe racer, if you know what I mean. Most bimmer people buy BMWs for the name, not the real performance qualities. They may talk of the performance qualities, but never actually find out if true. Mine is merely basic transportation that I got on the cheap, nothing more, nothing less.
Since I owned a '95 NSX-T for a couple of years, I still have the article comparing it to a '95 Targa and an F-355. Specs for 0-60 and skidpad were all very similar but the important thing was how the cars drove - how they felt. Specs and price don't tell you much.
--- I have never been so lucky to have driven any of those cars. You are a very lucky man to be in such a position.
>Does the highly praised Dartzeel really sound 6 times better than my 50 watt Plinius (a mini Plini?)? Or is it really perhaps a 1 or 2 % difference?>
That's for you to decide - no one else can make that determination for you. Even the best reviewer. Or the worst ones in TAC.
--- So true. Do feel free to give an estimate of the perceived difference as a percentage. The masses, of who compose a greater number of audiophiles, would like to know how much better these stratospherically priced components really are than our 2 or 3 k pre amps and amps.
> For that difference I would much rather spend my hard earned (the extra 15 grand) on room acoustics or better speakers for a possible 20 % change for the better.>
Good - then do it and shut up about it.
--- Nice response from someone who below tells me not to take it seriously. BTW, I have done both with my choice of loudspeakers.
>As if an amp or a cable change is going to make bjh's speakers sound like yours.>
No one is claiming that it will. Or that he even wants them to.
--- I was slamming a snob who has very high opinions of both himself and what he claim he hears. He slams people here on a regular basis with verbiage that would get anybody else booted. His choice of loudspeakers is very, shall I say, not up to the height of his nose.
>Yes, I hear differences.>
Not good enough - can you PROVE them?
--- I have put my money where my ears are at. One listen is all that is necessary. And it is not subjective, mi compadre. I do not have excuses nor do I make mention of that next component that will get me there.
>But I don't see that they really are as great as those claimed.>
A lot of these guys don't hear any differences at all, so you're ahead of the game. But that's ok - you can focus your time and attention on something else.
--- Yeah, debating shuysters. I do think the people you speak of do hear differences or they would not have purchased Hi Fi equipment in the first place. Like myself they most probably feel that there is a point of diminishing returns, where claims, for some reason, can't be readily validated. You live in the Bay area and no doubt question the credibility of the government. People with an R next to their name, as the industry Pied Pipers, should be held accountable as well for their opinions.
>Debating on whether or not his Harmon mute would sound better with this cable or that is laughable.>
Perhaps, but that's what some hobbyists do and enjoy doing.
--- And to think this hobby is supposed to be about the music and getting the best value for your hard earned dollar. That is if one had earned it and is not simply tapping from a trust fund. Perhaps that is why Peter(?) Aczel is so far out there, giving an equal but opposite angle on things.
If it seems laughable to you, fine; then go to a different forum and talk about something else.
We may find that laughable - as your comments above.
--- If my comments were so funny, you would not have been so peeved about them. I laugh when an audiophile purchases a recommended 1200 dollar cable and it sounds like crap. Not having the WBTs torqued may have been the reason. A 100 dollar copper cable, properly terminated would have done him better. Actually I felt sorry for him as he and his money had been severely misled.
It's only a hobby. Don't take it so seriously.
--- You much need to take your own advise.
