In a way. But it's not that different from any other group that uses sensory perceptions to form opinions. It's a "personal experience is more real than theory" group. They don't have to know how a car works or how to make peanut butter in order to enjoy the experiences.

By the way, not all people who might NOT be offended by the audiophile tag, believe that all components sound different or that there are not a lot of dubious-to-no value items on the market. I personally maintain that the "truth in audio" is somewhere in the middle, shading towards the objectivist side. As a musician, it's only natural that I've spent most of my life concerned more with personal experiences than the science behind them - more beauty than "truth", if you like - but PropHead has proven to be an eye-opening ride for me, the same as your research into audiophiles has been for you. PropHead has opened the skeptic in me, if not the hard core objectivist.
