The seating by the back wall is to get good ambiance and no big bass nodes - there is likely a similar position away from the back wall in very long rooms, which is what you have with an open back wall.
Part of the back wall seating placement is to maintain sufficient distance from the speakers so that the listening angle is not too wide and distance not too deep into the nearfield. If the room is very long then sitting at the back wall would give an overly narrow listening angle much smaller than the 60 deg. angle most recordings target.
