Right Josh, retaining as much of the energy as possible, but getting rid of the direct reflections from the wall. Those reflections are too close in time to the direct wave coming from the front of the speaker; scattering them to increase their arrival time at the listening position in relation to the arrival time of the speaker's front wave is what diffusion is all about.
All that is well understood and employed by a lot of Maggie (and other dipole planar) owners. I am left with only the dilemma of dealing with the reflections off a large TV screen set into the 5" window well in the middle of the wall behind my speakers. I was originally not going to have a screen in that well, but rather 1D diffusers. And I still may do that, but if I go with the TV I'm going to have to deal with the reflections coming off it. I've never had anything between my speakers before, so I don't know how much of a problem it's going to create. Only way to find out is to try it!
