RE: Limage: Oh my goodness.

OK, now see what you've made me done -- I tried listening to my current setup, taking the diffusers down, then listening again with them up.

Vote definitely goes to the diffusers. Better sense of depth with them. With, the first reflections off the wall are interfering, creating sonic confusion.

I should point out, though, that the speakers are currently closer to the front wall, only about 4' off. I've found that with the diffusers I don't have to pull them out as far into the room. With the speakers further out in a large room, it seems possible that they'd sound better without diffusion, which after all isn't without flaws. It's really all about keeping the first reflection at least 20 msecs out, or suppressing it 15 (preferably 20) dB, so that it doesn't interfere with the early reflections in the recording. Diffusion reduces its level without robbing the energy from the room as absorption would.

Diffusion is also useful in the rest of the room, as long as the diffusers are at least 8' away.
