"I don’t see that happening with either children or adults." - likely due to MP3 and so on, plus hi-fi no longer common, and no one can stand in a chair for more than 10 minutes.

It has never been any different has it?" - well they are a small percentage of the general public, and yes it was dif back in the 70s many people had mid-fi or hi-fi systems.
"As far as I can tell there is more high-end audio equipment being sold than ever before." - maybe in variety, but not in absolute numbers.
