Seems like the primary effort was your parents raising you to have a love of music.
Of course, more often than not that does not translate to someone acquiring a taste for fancy stereo gear. In fact most of the talented musicians I know don't care too much one way or the other about audiophile issues.
In fact, from a historical perspective, over 100 years ago many people regretted the development of recorded music. John Philip Sousa in particular was convinced that recorded music would reduce the percentage of people who learned to play an instrument. He was pretty much right about that.
This hobby, with some of its obsessive behavior, probably does as much to damage itself in the eyes of the ordinary onlooker as anything else. The trick is to remember to enjoy the music and share that instead of acting like one is recruiting members for a cult.
