I read lots of posts on here and other forums about how our hobby is dying. Kids are listening to lossy MP3s and don't care about quality music. I want to ask all the people who feel that way, what are you doing to save our hobby? Do you listen to high quality music with your children or grandchildren? Do you take them to hear live music?
Most days when we are playing around the house I put on some vinyl. Mostly it's in the background but sometimes we dance around to it. We listen to classical, jazz, 60s-80s pop and even Disney records. When we are in the car I generally play my iPod filled with ALAC songs. When my daughter was a little over one the humming of Howlin' Wolf lulled her to sleep. A few months ago she told me not to change the song when Leonard Cohen came on. She's four.
When I was a kid, my parents listened to music all the time. My dad was a amateur musician who played around the area. If we didn't have people over at the house playing music we were going to bluegrass festivals. We lived in a small town but there was a state college nearby and they would take me to see concerts and plays. The plays were student productions but it got me used to going out to see live entertainment. Sometimes I'd bring a friend with me and they'd enjoy the experience as well.
My parents system was probably pretty mid-fi. I don't remember what any of the components were except that the turntable was probably a Dual. They did however, have a pretty good selection music for me to listen to.
When I went away to college I was more interested in having something that was loud. If it sounded good that was great but if I could hear it outside with the doors shut that was better. I was more interested in going out to see bands and having a good time than I was in building up a good stereo. I did have some friends who didn't like to go out and did have some pretty nice units though.
Finally I got old and married and had a kid so my nights of going out and hearing music got farther and farther apart. I got more interested in making a system that sounded good at home. I went from listening to music through a fairly crappy stereo to listening to music through better and better stereos and going from CD to almost exclusively vinyl. I think that this is due to having a good musical upbringing. If my parents hadn't introduced me to quality music well played I would probably be content with MP3s played through mediocre equipment.
I went my own way for years but eventually found my way home. I expect that if I continue to share my love of music with my daughter that she will grow up with a love of her own.
Chad
