I don't see buying expensive gear as saving the hobby. Maybe I shouldn't have titled my post that. I see listening to music as saving the hobby. Isn't that what people say, that it's all about the music? Or do they say that it's all about buying $25,000 turntables? I can't remember.
My kid is 4 so while I do my best to take her out to see live music the focus on "saving the hobby" or passing on the love of music is listening to music at home. Before she starts hanging out with her friends and listening to music on cell phones I want her to hear how music can sound. I'm hoping then that since she knows how music can sound she'll not be satisfied with lossy MP3s through $10 earbuds.
If we continue to pass on our love of music then our children will want equipment that plays music to it's fullest potential. Having a future generation that wants high quality playback should ensure that there are companies that produce equipment on which to hear that music.
