This year's buggy whip, wagon wheel, and rotary phone conventions were down, too.
I'd say Hi Fi is changing, not dying.
We are seeing the rise of regional shows where audiophiles can audition a plethora of gear selection all under one roof. No dependence on the local dealer choosing what line to carry based on a captive local audience. We can hear what's brand new, from a multitude of lines! Just a quick trip to LA, San Fran, Denver, Vegas, Montreal, Jacksonville....the list is growing and for a meager travel investment we can hear it all!
The average teenager has a musical library in excess of 10,000 tunes. Kids with Rhapsody or Pandora have millions of selections available....on demand. No waiting around for a DJ to spin a song on the damn radio for them!
Record stores are disappearing, which is sad, but it is because we can get everything they used to offer online, cheaper! With auditions before buying, 24/7!
An audiophile can now come closer to the original "Kind of Blue" than he could when it was first released! A kid could have a Hi Rez 24/96 version downloaded and playing faster than you can go to the garage and start the car for a trip to the record store.
Need help with an "absolute polarity" issue with an obscure preamp? Hop online and have a detailed answer within 30 seconds!
Feel like chatting about Hi Fi? There are hundreds of like minded kooks just waiting for you to log on!
We have gear that can correct equalization for our individual rooms, we are looking at gear that can plug into your headphones and recreate the sound of specific rooms other people are listening in, and we can get together with friends for a shared simultaneous listening session of opera experience....with friends who are on seperate continents!
I have a hankering for Hadyn's Symphony #88, but I am work right now....ooops....I can ghost onto my home server and play it back here at work in Hi Rez through a 300 dollar USB thingie into my DAC into my integrated into my desktop Intermezzos....nice.
Who said Hi Fi was dying?
Wait, I want to listen to my lossless Hi Fi version of Coltrane and Hartman via an iPhone and some ear buds.
Ok, now, you were saying?
;)
