I agree. I chose a transformer from Edcor that had an 8v tap, way easier . But, have you tried an LT1085, low dropout ,3A regulator yet? It can produce a full 3 Amps with only a 1.5v input to output voltage (6.3+1.5=7.8 Vin Min.). At a low heater voltage, the dropout is only 1Vdc!! They work well.
