I haven't been able to make comparisons with high res originals because I've been using Tidal, and my attempts to compare with some redbook versions went nowhere (in one case, the channels had been reversed!). Also, my MQA capability is limited to a Dragonfly Red. (I did try software decoding through a Lynx e22 and it sounded quite good, but that's without the second and third unfold and the MQA reconstruction filter, and I didn't experiment with bypassing MQA.)

When I tried bypassing MQA on the Dragonfly, the difference was usually clear, depending on the track. Transients seemed sharpened, almost as if the sound had been deblurred. Midbass was for some reason more prominent. On a few cuts, the improvement was spectacular, on others subtle.
