I also have little idea what MQA costs would add but if the MQA proponents have their way, I suspect the costs would be substantial and ultimately in the billions of dollars. Starting with you having to purchase an MQA converter costing at least several hundred dollars. Then every time you purchase new music you will pay a premium for the MQA format. And for those manufacturers, their MQA-compatible products would most likely pay a significant licensing / royalty fee. In other words, if their dream succeeds than anybody having to do with recorded or playback music would contribute to the MQA trust fund.
So clearly there is much at stake here.
What necessitates a performance quantum leap is the fact that not one but 2 of the perhaps most influential types in mainstream high-end audio (Harley and Atkinson) declared MQA to be not just a quantum leap but equating the performance, regardless of cost, to that of experiencing the birth of a new world. Whatever that means.
Now either there's a hint of truth in those two endorsement or there isn't.
If there is a hint of truth to their performance claims, then why isn't anybody else with credibility making similar claims? Could these two possess such keen hearing and well-trained ears that few if any could match?
On the other hand, if there is little or no truth in these two editors-in-chief claims of MQA performance, then the question is, what the frick is going on here? And what could possibly been their motivation for such outlandish performance claims? And if these two are not being legitimate about MQA performance, then other questions start popping up like, what else have they not been legitimate about? And how long has this illegitimate behavior been going on, etc?
