On my $350 at used prices Marantz DV-9600 the SACD uniformly sound better, even better in many cases than a ripped CD played using any number of computers and streamers and my favorite DAC.
So I don't think SACD was a bad idea. I buy one now and again, but then I also buy DVD-A from time to time. It might still be a viable medium had it not been for the internet and hi rez downloads.
My only complaint is that it is a proprietary and not easily ripped to computer.
