Tube preamps feeding low impedance causes first a bass roll off, then - if impedance really drops - then dynamics go too. You can use an output transformer on the output stage and solve the problem, but then really good tranies are more expensive than a cathode follower, and they add a characteristic sonic signature.

If you can't do it in some good shade, it should still be possible to see medium damage. The fabric may not be harmed noticeably where the Mylar is torn, so shining a light through is the only way to make certain. Other than that, you can listen for whooshing sounds while driving the bass panel.
