Thanks for your help

Thanks very much for you help. Its good to hear from someone who knows a lot about crossovers!
I am just finding my feet!
I'm a little lost when you say this:

"The Behringer dcx2496 is very useful for tuning - determining your desired crossover slopes etc. But is sounds tizzy and sharp without modification. Its bass, however, is remarkable given the price. I think this is the one for you. Use it on your bass panel, and use a simple capacitor for your line level crossover's mid/treble high pass. The external crossover's high pass to the mid/treble is simply a cap, and you can do it at the line level without any problem. All you need is to choose the cap for each amp you intend to try. I would be happy to calculate the values for you or provide you with a simple circuit that would allow matching a single cap to each amp with a potentiometer to adjust impedance. This option will easily be the best sounding."

What I think you might be saying to use the Behringer for the bass panel and sort of run the mid/treble section like a passive line level crossover? Is this what you mean? thanks very much for the offer to help me calculate cap values for my amp, - might take you up on that kind offer!

Going back to using an active crossover for all the panels just to get up an running easily (then I can maybe think of doing other things later) I can see that the Behringer DCX2496 and Rane AC22B readily available secondhand for decent prices. So that's a good start, then I can sell them for similar money when I upgrade.

Ah, So in your opinion I made a big mistake discounting the Ashly crossovers?. I must have read an opinion that was not the whole picture on them as after reading again I can see they are highly recommend.
There are a little more pricey than the others, - I suppose I would be looking at the XR-1001 or the XR-2001 (are these the ones you mean or do you mean other models.) Perhaps if I could get a used one it would be a good option to keep the costs down.

I know the Behringer DCX2496 is much more flexible than the Rane AC22B or Ashly XR-1001/2001 but in terms of pure sound quality (using analogue inputs) which of them would you say is the best?, - I am guessing the Ashly?

The Marchard XM9 looks nice and whilst at the budget end of the Marchand range but I see the new price is about $600 so that's a bit out of my price range unfortunately, so perhaps I should look at one of the others for the time being and upgrade later.

I am a bit lost to tell the truth when it comes to crossover jargon, - 6gb, 12gdb, 18db, 25 db etc! 1st, 2nd,3rd 4rd order crossovers etc. I need to do some reading! Also I see a some of these crossovers are fixed at 24db per oct roll off (pro standard), and I see the Magnepan spec is 18dB for the bass crossover, - is this a problem? I know the DCX2496 is adjustable in this regard so its not a problem with that unit.

Thanks again for your help,
Colin
