RE: Maggie 3.3R Crossover question

I read that thread on the comparison of the 2.5 & 2.6. I agree that you need a good stout high current amp to drive them well. I found this out by driving my 2.5's with a 65wpc vintage receiver and then a modded Yammie MX-830 power amp. Also with planar speakers this size, rigid stands are a MUST.

ALSO, the difference in the woofers is that the 2.6 woofer is rated at 3.9-ohms and the 2.5 woofer is rated at 3.6-ohms, the size is the SAME. You can upgrade the 2.5 with the 2.6 crossover, but you should alter the values a bit due to the different woofer resistance AND the lower resistance of heavier wire guage inductors.

I have the 2.5's and like them alot. Those ribbon tweeters are DA-bomb! Not having heard the 2.6's I can't say which I'd prefer. From what I've read around here is that they are rated down to 30hz and in rigid stands, they do have a solid bottom end. IMO, the shorter tweeter is to hold back a little something that you'd have to purchase bigger (more expensive) Maggie's to get. The 2.6 is essentially a 2.5 with a different crossover so that's probably the one to get. If you can find some with little or no de-lam going on, jump on 'em.

So, you've got options. I think many here like their 3-series bi and tri amped because the results are so much better than a similar cost upgraded passive x-o on these. I think the 2.5 & 2.6 fans like that with a relatively simple x-over upgrade, and a big SS amp their two-ways are excellent performers. You're lucky enough that you can sell off some gear you're not using and upgrade some things right off the bat.
