Maggie 3.3R Crossover question

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to ask a few question on these speakers, - if anyone know about this stuff it would be much appreciated.

Just before I bought the Maggie 2.7QRs I have now I found a pair of used Maggie MG3.3Rs in a shop. They didn't have the ribbon tweeter transport strips which was not a good start but on listening to them in the shop they sounded truly terrible. Thin, bright and no bass. After some research later I found out why, - the shop had lost the external crossover boxes for them (and didn't realise they needed them!). I understand half the crossover (the mid/treble part) is in the speaker itself but the bass/mid crossover is the external box. So running them without the crossover boxes would obviously have produced a terrible sound as the bass panel was being run full range messing up the sound.

I had been thinking about possibly buying them and getting the crossover boxes made (or buy new ones) but I wanted to ask first, - is it likely any damage would have been done to the panels without the external crossover box in place?, - as in particular the midrange panels would have been run full range with bass frequencies too that they were not designed to reproduce. I guess the ribbon tweeter should have been OK as it is was still going through the internal crossover.

Wanted to just quickly ask, - how does the 3.3R rate in the Maggies 3 series range, - is there much difference between these and the MGIIIa and the MG3.5R? I know the MG3.6R is quite a bit different (more midrange panel areas etc)

I note the ribbon did look a bit wavy (front to back wavy) when I looked in the back of the tweeter at it, - could this have been caused by moving them around without the transport strips in? And if so is this bad news?

So I am not sure whether to do ahead and get these 3.3Rs, - they do have these problems, - and they near 20 years old now, - I guess they could be prone to voice coil corrosion problems/glue failure issues? Would this be considered a reasonable buy or not? All the panels and tweeters did work but it was hard to judge their overall sound due to the missing crossover boxes.

Any advice would be appreciated,,
Cheers,
Colin
