This is a very good comparison of a mass-market hyped product and an audiophile-market hyped product.Bose products are particularly reviled in audiophile circles because so many non-audiophiles automatically associate this brand with "the best." If buyers choose Bose because the sound fit their particular tastes, then who can argue with the choice? But, so much is sold simply on reputation, and that means a lot of other, less costly, alternatives are never considered.
Boy, isn't that a whole lot different from audiophile stuff? I don't think that the bulk of the audiophile market is any different. A lot of gear is chosen based on the buyer's self deception that he is more "informed" than the non-cognoscente simply because he has read the reviews. I have no problem with anyone liking B&W or any of the other media-hyped brands, but how much of this stuff is sold without a real, personal listening preference being the primary determinant?
I have mixed feelings about how the media itself seems to feed the frenzy for particular products by only offering rave reviews and very little in the way of dissenting views. If people are comforted by consensus reviews affirming their choice, I suppose it is not completely an evil. But, this often ends up with certain products and certain generic types of "sound" crowding out alternatives. For example, while I am sure a lot of people really do like the sound of speakers developed based on Floyd Toole's measurement techniques, what about people like me (and a whole bunch of my friends) who don't like the sound of brands, like NHT, PSB and Paradigm, who rely on these techniques. Why isn't there more discussion in the print media of dissenting views?
