As far as I've been able to tell, all the emotion and controversy is not so much because the speakers sound a certain way or cost a certain amount. It's because of how Bose has marketed their products for decades, particularly the early hype over the "direct reflecting" design or whatever it's called. I think Bose fooled a lot of folks into thinking that their speakers were something special or unique. The natural backlash followed. If all this happened today, nobody would take notice because the "high end" audio industry has really exploded and splintered, with hundreds of makers touting their products as unique by design. Not many of them can really live up to their claims, either, but it doesn't matter because none of them have the collective ear of the masses. Bose would probably never get too far off the ground if he were starting in 2007.
Off topic, I took an acoustics class taught by Bose, who was (and I think still is) on the faculty at MIT. It was an excellent course. Difficult and well taught.
