Home Rocky Road

From Classic Rock to Progessive to hip hop to today's hot new tunes!

I beg to differ.

I have the deepest regard for both Genesis (with Gabriel & Hackett) and Jethro Tull (Anderson, Barr, etc.), but neither group was as big as Bad Company was back in the 70's. Tull peaked with Aqualung and (switching gears) it's follow-up Thick as a Brick and held onto their following for a number of years, and Genesis didn't reach a wide mainstream audience until Phil Collins influenced style changes from eclectic to more personal romantic songs. Bad Company, when I first saw them back in '79, were so popular that they were called back for encore after encore in a packed arena! Folks just would NOT leave; it was almost a religious experience based on crowd enthusiasm.

Interestingly, the Bad Company Reunion tour was less successful from my perspective because of Mick Ralphs! In the nearly sold-out Reunion Arena concert (Dallas), he appeared old, worn out and hardly capable of playing his signature solos; it was a sadly mediocre performance. I have no idea how well this tour did nation-wide, but if the reviews were anything like my impression it was bound to influence attendance at the remaining shows.

Conversely, when Bad Company toured two years later with originals Burrell & Ralphs replaced by Jaz and 'Bucket' the performance was stellar! Obviously Paul Rodgers and long time side-man drummer Simon Kirke is more interested in achieving high quality when performing old songs that folks revere and indeed, this incarnation of Bad Company was (is?) superb. Note: Check out Merchants of Cool DVD for a good indication of what this line-up is like.
