My brother and I bought a pool for the family...

...circa 1969. We had a paper route--remember those?--saved up a boatload of money thanks to our parents, and bought an above ground pool. Fifteen feet across, four feet deep. Came with a ladder, filter, and a thermometer to measure the water temp.
We set it up, filled it with water, jump in...and almost immediately jumped out again. Water temp was 64 degrees, enough to cause cramps from shivering.
Pool wasn't heated, and what we found out to our dismay was that it took a week of 90-degree weather to warm the water enough to be comfortable.
My dad used it a lot more that we kids did, he'd been through a lot of hardship during the Great Depression and was made of sterner stuff. He really loved the pool.
But after about 5 or 6 years, it was just a pain in the ass to have around. Our yard wasn't really big enough. Once ozone ate away at the liner, that was all she wrote.
I love to swim, but I'd rather do it in somebody else's pool, or even better yet, the Atlantic Ocean.

The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
