Basically, the highest TOU rate is from 4PM to 9PM, exactly the time that the solar starts sun setting. That's where the batteries would kick in to avoid the high rates.
During the day, your excess power would charge the batteries and if they are charged up, you move excess power to the grid. I haven't looked into it much, but I expect the controllers are smart and would charge the batteries at off peak, 12AM-6AM, unless the batteries are already charged.
