Yup, batteries are expensive and I too am concerned about lifespan and the toxic shells. We're grandfathered for net-metering for another 10 years, we have time. Hopefully, better and less expensive options will come to market.

Have you heard about V2H, Vehicle to Home? The idea is to use your solar panels to charge your EV. You can then use the EV as a battery source at night. It's not there quite yet as a standard. But if it worked well, I'd consider it. With a $7,500 rebate for an EV, it would be the ticket. Then, I'd not need to buy solar batteries for $15-20K as most EVs have more battery power than two Tesla power walls.

Still, lithium batteries are not a long term solution.
