Bingo. Also assumed was starve versus sprays of distortion, or even a rise in power supply.John, bass can increase (for one example) if there's a regulator that falls out. In a really fun case, you'll actually get the preamp to motorboat, but if it's not that edgy, you just get a big bloat. If heaters starve in a tube pre, the gm drops precipitously and you get a treble decrease (same subjective effect).
I'm not sure why someone would want to use a big old saturable lump o'metal on their power cord, so why is this different than sticking a resistor in series and saying, wow, there's an effect? (Not claiming the same effect, just making an analogy) Maybe that's why I find the problem pretty uninteresting. Maybe that's why you have the opposite reaction. ;-)
