It would appear that EVERYBODY has missed the most important item.

The fact is, it AFFECTED the system. So much for the statement "line cords can't do squat, so much for the silly statement "miles and miles of wire".

The fact that Dan B, an avid "doubter" so to speak, reported a significant difference...leaves me no doubt whatsoever that an audible difference occurred.

DB: ""
In discussion with another engineer we agreed that the change in the phase of the current could only be from the magnetic field from the "slider".""

Not the magnetic field from the slider. Rather, the permeability of it.

It is affecting the inductance of the system.

DB: ""
In addition the gross distortion I was hearing was probably due to the phase of the current being changed enough to alter the charge cycle that normally happens on a standard linear power supply. In short: as the voltage peaked across the PS caps the current was far enough out of phase so the caps would not get charged as they normally would.""

A possibly plausible assertion. Did you, however, measure the voltage on the caps to verify this?

I believe you will find that the added inductance of that widgit is not of sufficient magnitude to satisfy your assertion.

IMHO, a better explanation would be had if you had measured the safety ground current on the line cord while sliding that "tuner". I believe that is where you will find the reason.

You should test the widgit at small increments along the cord, and see if the level of effect correlates with the twist pitch of the cord.

CD: ""
So: Now you have some idea on how high end line cords can screw up a standard linear power supply.""

More importantly, you have shown that a line cord can indeed affect the system. That is a very important point. Thank you for presenting your results.

More tests are needed, if you would like to persue it.

Cheers, John
