People at the lower price point wouldn't know Krell / Bryston & people interested in Krell / Bryston wouldn't believe it

Most likely you could compare almost any non-clipping solid state amp selling at $800 eith $4000 solid state amps and most people listening, if not all, would not be able to identify which amp was being used.

That's a typical result of blind auditions -- been there, done that.

The question is how could these null results (not actually proof of anything -- just evidence supporting the hypothesis that not all components sound different) be used to sell audio equipment without leading to lawsuits?

If they could be used, they would already be in use.

Remember that most audio ads DO NOT specifically mention competitors to avoid lawsuits over something as fuzzy as audio component preferences.
