Interestingly, when I first purchased a pair of AN/J speakers in 1997 corner placement was never mentioned as a recommendation. Near wall placement was most common but corner placement seems to have become a more recent practice. I think that the port dimensions may have changed slightly to accommodate the corner siting practice but I'm not positive. I don't think there is any difference in box dimensions or port size between factory built and kit built speakers so that's probably not an issue.
The AN speaker corner placement can be somewhat problematic. Counterintuitively you might try getting them as far into the corners as possible if you have not done so already and see if that lessens the boom. Even moving the speakers less than an inch will result in easily audible differences.
When I posted a similar question to Peter Qvortrup about placement for my speakers his response was: "Put the speakers really close to the corners, an inch or two from the back, angle about 30 degrees, and as close to the sidewalls as you can get and see what happens with the bass." If I recall, I think my best results with AN/J speakers in that position was 1/2" from the side wall and 1" - 2" from the back wall with the speaker axis crossing 3 feet in front of the listening position. Of course, every room is different so some time in experimenting will be worth it when you finally get them to sound right to you. If you have not already done so, you might want to review the Loudspeaker Placement section in the AN/E manual for factory built speakers you can download as a PDF from Audio Note at the link below. It offers more extensive placement options than the downloadable kit manual.
I still own the AN speakers but am currently using a pair of Tonian Labs TL-D1 speakers that allow somewhat more flexible placement in my small room without any boominess issue. In my experience AN speakers sound better in larger rooms than my current small room with the AN/K being the exception.
