My mini report was aptly labeled 'casual impressions', as a signal to everyone to take it with an enormous grain of salt. I don't doubt that the showroom was sub-optimal for 1.7s, and that the all tube McIntosh gear was somewhat mismatched. Needless to say, a properly broken in pair of 1.7s in a good room with well matched gear will smoke the pair I've listened to at the dealer's.
It is fascinating to me how the Maggies family, despite being of the same ilk, tend to produce various offspring with their own quirks. Like, I've never expected the type of sound I've heard from 1.7s to emanate from a Maggie speaker. But there you have it, each pair has its own unique values/foibles.
I guess it boils down to one's personal preferences (duh!). I am enamored with the old school MG-1 IMP (modded) presentation -- lots of air in the mid range coupled with plenty of visceral slam. Maybe it's my room that's in some unique way coupled with these magnificent beasts that produces that incredibly intoxicating experience, but anyone who's listened to my Maggies was blown away. I doubt that they'd be blown away if I presented them with the type of a sound I've heard from 1.7s at the dealer's. While being correct and airy with plenty of brilliant highs, the 1.7s in that room lacked visceral presence, something that is direly needed if one is to experience the 'being right there' listening nirvana.
