I certainly think they could work. It really depends on the response curve of the drivers and I haven't seen one for the 1.7, or heard them yet, either -- I'm just going by what I've read others say about their balance.
The only practical difference I can think of in the wires is that a foil ribbon would have somewhat higher thermal dissipation owing to its greater surface area, so you could potentially use less massive conductors and run multiple sections in parallel to maintain the 4 ohm DCR.
