A room where reflections are too heavily controled can make any speasker sound dead and lifeless, esecialy a dipole. Dipole bass, as an example, is very dependent on placement, room nodes and the type and location of room treatments. Over damped rooms will also impact the excitement and immediaacy of the highs as well as the naturalness of voices.
This is not to say that those who have suggested limitations in the 1.7s are wrong. I have never heard a pair myself so I'm not in a position to comment one way or another on that. But the room, system set up and of course the quality of the recordings demoed will have a more profound effect on the resulting sound than any single component, including the speakers themselves. You can have a $75000 system far from working at its best and a $15000 system that sounds superb, or vica versa, depending on the room and atention to detail. Two identical systems in two different rooms can sound completely different from one another. After 40 years of audiophile experience I've realized that, borrowing from Jim Smith, you need to get your system to a point where it "plays the room". That level of attention to setup and detail is rarely seem in dealer soundroom auditions.
I can say that with regard to bass, new Maggies, as a general rule, improve as they break in, This can take a few hundred hours of listening IMHO. Of course that's based on my experiences with older Maggies. I can't say for sure that a QR bass panel will respond the same way, but I suspect it might. In my experience the bass goes deeper and gets fuller and is more tuneful over time. I also wonder whether a pair of 1.7's fitted with Mye stands would exhibit the same improvements I saw with my 1.6's.
In the end, your impression of the 1.7s may be the result of a combination of factors, not least of which are the idiosyncrasies you, PG and others have observed.
Maggies, because you can never be too thin!
