I've heard a few different Maggie models, and while each model and make and year has its own quirky personality, they all are unmistakably of the Maggie family. You know, that unique life-like Maggie sound...
1.7s are the first Maggie model I've heard that somehow deviates from this (to my ears). Don't get me wrong, I could live with those speakers if someone were to give them to me as a gift;) They're nice, very pleasant sounding and all that jazz. But the 'Magginess' is somehow missing.
1.7s strike me as sounding more like your typical high end hi fi gear. I can easily imagine a pair of speakers retailing for $12,000 that would sound similar to 1.7s. As a matter of fact, I doubt that I would be able to pick out 1.7s as belonging to the Maggie family if I were to listen to them blindfolded. I've heard many top drawer super expensive speakers that emit sound similar to what 1.7s are doing.
Or maybe it's all due to the McIntosh gear, as some of you have implied? That super snobbish, almost aristocratic stiff upper lip 'airs and graces' sound that the wealthy clientele for some reason prefer.
Being more of a 'blue collar' audio enthusiast, I miss the grit and the guts and the in-your-face rudeness that Maggies are known for. You know, letting it all hang out...
