I had the same question when I was planning my frames, AFAIK, the dynamat isn't as effective when sandwiched between two materials.Here's Davey's project that got me going on mine:

BTW, when I first planned mine, I considered using sheets of Baltic Birch to make solid frame pieces, which would have not required joinery work. PG talked me into using Poplar boards instead, and I'm glad he did. It was much easier to work with (cut, drill, mill, etc.).
Also if you don't want to bother with a finish, and you make the frames around 16" wide, and 1-5/8 to 1-3/4 deep, just cover it with a stock MG12 sock, you will just have to cut off the excess on the bottom (no biggie, that's where the staples go anyway). Magnepan will happily sell you the socks.
