RE: "Correct" reproduction of live sound is pretty much a myth

Correct recreation of the live event is the goal. Just because we haven't reached it doesn't mean we should give up and stop trying.

Still the point about recordings is valid. There is simply no way a recording made with spaced omnis 15 feet above the orchestra is going to recreate the experience of being 7th row center in the same hall at the same time. The mics just aren't there.

Lots of people have tried to record from 7th row center but there are other problems with that approach which result in a worse end product than the mics above the orchestra method.
