"Not entirely is that the goal of anechoic measurements. It is not to illustrate how they sound in a typical room but to enable one to predict how they can sound in typical listening rooms"You don't need an anechoic chamber to do this -- the multi billiondollar company who wants to market their chamber may say it but truth it ain't.
"But one would never know about all this without doing both anechoic measurements and room response measurements."
Wait a minute -- now you want both measurements. The anechoic is used as a predictor of how it will perform in "typical rooms" so is this an accurate prediction or not? If it is an accurate predicition then why would you then want to see the in room measurements. It is your logic that is faulty. This is a simple A B C formula. If A is the anechoic predictting measurement and B and C are "Typical rooms" then if A can predict B and A can also predict C then B can predict C and C can predict B. If of course A cannot really predict B and C then A is ineffective at doing the very thing it claims to be able to do.
"Speaker manufacturers don't always know how to place their speakers to best advantage. Art Dudley found the Audio Note E sounded better away from the corner!"
You say you don;t put any stock into Art so why trust him now? The problem I had and most audiophile will have having grown up for possibly decades with freestanding designs is to something that sounds quite different. I initially preferred the J in a free standing position because I felt the bass overpowering. That is no longer the case with some work on positioning them more precisely and getting the toe in correct. Some other reviewers who also initially stated a preference for free standing have retracted and have been placing the in the corners. There is also nothing wrong with a speaker room friendly enough to be positioned anywhere in the room and get excellent results. I tried them toed in to directly facing eachother and they still beat most everything.
"Just because you can't use the quasi-anechoic measurement graphs of the Quads shown in Stereophile doesn't mean no one else can."Just because you can't use your ears to determine what good sound reproduction is doesn't mean no one else can.
