Actually, to be honest I recall that from a 1980's ad either by Quad or by a Quad retailer - it was in a Stereophile or TAS magazine. The model of Quad then was the ESL-63 which became the 988 which became the current 2805 (? I think is the model) - they're basically all the same speaker, just more rigid frames over the years. Now, I believe that the ESL63/988/2805 are
1. Crossover-LESS
2. One way (I guess they'd have to be without a crossover?)
3. Point SourceThe Quad has miles and miles of wire emanating from the center of the speaker with which it radiates sound out from the center of the speaker outward, like a rock dropped in a pond would generate waves. Peter Walker (the designer) went to great lengths to achieve this.
And of course being electrostatic, it's the fastest gun in the west - all these waves radiate outward in nanoseconds. The diaphram of the quad that actually makes music is I believe less thick than a human hair - by comparison, a cone speaker is a pumping piston driven boulder in an echo chamber.
But if you can't keep them 4' from side walls and (in my opinion) 5' from rear walls, forget it! Again in my opinion, I like them at least 8' apart and to sit at least 8' away for their full grandeur. I sit in a 13' equailateral triangle with my Quads and there is no rear wall for 8'. That's a tall order!
Electrostats aren't for everyone, but for many it's their last speaker - it was mine, 20 years now. Wouldn't dream of anything else because for me it just doesn't get any better. And it's amazing how much better much equipment is than you might think once it's on the quads - and conversely, how quickly you can rule out the "pretenders" to the throne. Very revealing!
Now having said all that, I have Quad ESL-57's made in 1969 which do NOT have the point source characteristic (although I believe they're phase coherent) - that's why I wanted to give a listen to the Quads my local shop had in a decent room, but they were gone by time I got back.
