Re: You almost havie it backwords...

Not to mention the other qualities Quads measure well at - I've never seen Quad measurements actually but I have to assume they indicate good Transient response, decay, dynamics, distortion based on listening. Take a look at a square wave passed through a quad - it's square! I know nothing of measurements, but I'm going to guess a "square" square wave positively impacts transient response (by definition), decay (stop on a dime - or not, where appropriate), dynamics (well microdynamics anyway - they won't "cerwin vega" you) and distortion. Of course listening to them it's pretty obvious, not a lot of measurement required - any non-audiophile can tell what sounds real (audiophiles are never sure!). Articulation and timing are superb if the rest of your system is up to it. If you're addicted to box resonances, well look elsewhere.

My local very small shop (small city) started carrying Quads so I was going to give the 988 (or whatever it's called now) a more serious listen and by time I went back they were sold. They said they sold a pair of 989's (or whatever they're called now) too - both came and went before I got to them for any length of time. If this were New York I wouldn't be surprised, but I've seen a lot of speakers at similar price points sit in that shop for years!

I agree though that in the end measurements mean nothing - but it's always reassuring when they coincide with one's listening experience. And if your source is digital, digital domain EQ can make your life ever so much easier - rooms always blow frequency response measurements to hell anyway. Hell I stream my vinyl into an A/D at 24/96 so I can EQ it - somehow it retains it's vinyl-ity and is flat to my room, huge difference - love it.
